Suizenji Jojuen Garden
Suizenji Jojuen Garden traces its origins to a teahouse built by Hosokawa Tadatoshi, the first lord of the Higo domain. The garden was completed in 1670 (Kanbun 10) by Hosokawa Tsunatoshi, the third lord of the domain.
Designed in the Momoyama-style as a stroll garden, Suizenji Jojuen features a large pond fed by abundant spring water from underground sources connected to Mount Aso and the Shirakawa River. The water flows so purely that the sand appears to dance beneath it.
Within the garden stands Izumi Shrine, dedicated to Hosokawa Fujitaka, Hosokawa Tadaoki, and successive lords of the Hosokawa family.
